Sharing Meditations
The obvious reward to growing one’s own food is being able to eat it.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to learn how to cook and share my abundant harvest with others. It is in this preparing and sharing process that my gratitude truly comes to life. There are few things I get more excited about in life than bringing a harvest from the garden to the kitchen, and then watching as other people enjoy fresh, tasty food.
To me, every aspect of cooking is a meditation and a reminder to be thankful for the joy of sharing the harvest.
Washing
As you wash your veggies, be thankful for the water that grew your harvest and now cleans it. Bathe your crop as you would a baby, gently scrubbing each and every crevice to ensure all the bugs and grit are removed. Take your time and embrace this moment as another opportunity to give thanks.
Chopping
Use a clean, sharp knife and remain aware, to ensure all you chop is the crop, and not any part of your fingers. Focus on the rhythm of the blade against the board. Think about the positive energy you want to impart to this dish. Take this as yet another opportunity to be grateful—and careful.
Cooking
You have worked so hard to get the crop to this point, and now is the time to make sure it doesn’t go to waste. Take care not to overseason, overcook, or burn. Once again, be mindful, be generous, and be present.
